Norfolk: Dunton-cum-Doughton

DUNTON-CUM-DOUGHTON, 3 miles W. of Fakenham, forms a parish on the north side of the vale of the Wensum, in Walsingham union, Fakenham county court district, Norwich bankruptcy district, Gallow petty sessional division and hundred, Fakenham polling district of West Norfolk, Burnham rural deanery, and Norfolk archdeaconry.

It had 167 inhabitants in 1881, living on 1721 acres, and has a rateable value of £1948.

The Earl of Leicester is owner of the soil and lord of the manor, which was given by Henry VIII. to Ralph de Hauville, to be held by the service of keeping the King's falcons: but in the reign of Elizabeth it passed to Chief Justice Coke.

Dunton CHURCH (St. Peter), comprising nave, chancel, and south porch, is in the Perpendicular style, and was reroofed in 1854 and restored in 1859, when it was furnished with neat open benches, new lectern, and reading desk, &c. There is a long inscription to Matthew Lancaster, who was `descended from John Lancaster, the first of that race in England, and first founder of Lancaster.' The east window was filled with stained glass in 1864, by the guardians of Walsingham union, as a mark of esteem for their late chairman, C. M. Feltom, Esq.; and in the chancel are three painted windows, one is in memory of Mrs. Frere, and another to Miss Dowell. The vicarage, valued in K.B. at £5 6s 8d., and now at £177, is in the patronage of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev. Edward William Dowell, B.A., who has a neat residence, built in 1855.

A School Board was formed in 1873, for the united districts of Dunton-cum-Doughton, Shereford, and Toftrees. The school is at Shereford. The Board now consists of Rev. E. W. Dowell (chairman), Revs. W. Barlow and A. J. Johnson, and Messrs. G. Gayford, John Long, G. Riches, and F. Butcher. Mr. Rumbellow is clerk.
