Norfolk Residents and Places of Abode
A copy of the poll for the Knights of the Shire for the county of Suffolk, taken at Ipswich, Aug 30, 1727 taken before Robert Goodrich Esq., High Sheriff
Candidates :- Sir William Barker Bt. (2965), Sir Jermyn Davers Bt. (3077), John Holt Esq. (2365)
Printed by John Bagnall, Ipswich, 1727
N.B. There are several towns which are called by the same name and others which although they are spelt differently sound the same. Each of these have been combined under one heading. If any Freeholders Names are not truly Spelled, that ought to be excused, considering that the Clerks, who were Strangers to them, could do no more than to set them down according to their Sound.
The Towns are set in an alphabetical Order.
Each original Page consists of four Columns.
- The first contains the "Places of Freehold and the Freeholders Names"
- The second has the "Places of Abode"
- Third and fourth columns are the letters of the 2 candidates who were voted for (not transcribed).
Note that only people who appear to live in Norfolk or places which are partly in both Norfolk and Suffolk have been transcribed out of the total of approximately 3000 voters.

[End of Poll Book]
Notes
- 1. There is a Nathaniel Oakes living in Snetterton in the 1734 Norfolk Poll.
- 2. Amerlughall/Amsinghall is possibly Arminghall?
- 3. Gawdy (or Gaudy) Hall is found under Redenhall with Harleston. There is a John Wogan in Cambridge, freehold Redenhall in the 1734 Norfolk Poll.
- 4. Gorleston has been transcribed in full even it did not become part of Norfolk until much later.
- 5. In the transcription of the Poll Book the modern spelling of place names has been added in brackets "()" to many of the entries so that a search will find them.
- 6. Mendham is partly in Norfolk so has been transcribed in full, so the places of residence here are in Suffolk.
- 7. There is a Needham in Norfolk and in Suffolk we have "Needham Market" a chapelry which was part of the Parish of Barking at this time.
- 8. Sarsingham is unknown as a place in Norfolk? Possibles are Saxlingham or Surlingham?
- 9. Hellingham is where? Possibles are Hellington? or Ellingham in the Waveney Valley?
- 10. Southtown is now part of Great Yarmouth.
- 11. At this time the Harleston (in Norfolk) will be found listed under Redenhall but see next note.
- 12. There is a small village called Harleston in Suffolk which is 6.5 miles north of Ipswich.
