Ludford

"LUDFORD, a parish chiefly in the hundred of Munslow, county Salop, and partly in that of Wolphy, county Hereford, half a mile S. of Ludlow, its post town. It is situated on the S. bank of the river Teme, opposite Ludlow, and is included in that borough. The village and church are in Herefordshire, but the larger portion of the parish, which contains the township of Street, is in Shropshire. This was a Roman station, and subsequently the site of the monastery of St. John. An old but substantial bridge crosses the Teme, which here forms the boundary line between the counties of Hereford and Salop. Stone is quarried. A saline spring rises at Saltmore in this parish out of the red marl, and is esteemed efficacious in eruptive and scorbutic complaints. The living in a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford, value £200. The church is an old edifice, with a tower. It is much ornamented, and supposed to have been built in the reign of Henry I. A hospital for six poor people was founded here in 1672 by Sir Job Charlton, and has an income of £63. There are some other charities, the whole producing about £78 per annum.
