"CLAPTON-IN-GORDANO, a parish in the hundred of Portbury, in the county of Somerset, 4 miles from the Clevedon station of the Great Western railway, and 10 from Bristol. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £300, in the patronage of Walter Bernard, Esq. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a beautiful edifice in the early English style of the 13th century, with Norman tower. The register commences about 1558. There is a parochial school for both sexes. Near the church stand the remains of the manor-house. The lord of the manor is Walter Bernard, Esq. Naish House is a fine edifice pleasantly situated."
