It is situated on Cutcombe Ford, under Dunkery Beacon, which latter is the highest point in Somersetshire, rising. 1,696 feet above the sea-level. The village is small, and the population wholly agricultural. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £214, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church, dedicated to St. John, is an ancient structure in the early English style of architecture, consisting of nave, aisles porch, and tower. There is an endowed school for both sexes, in which a Sunday-school is held. The Hon. P. P. Bouverie is lord of the manor, and has a pretty shooting-box here called Raleigh's Cottage."
