"SKILGATE, a parish in the hundred of Williton, county Somerset, 5 miles E. of Dulverton, 8 W. of Wiveliscombe, its post town, and 11 N.E. of Tiverton. The village, which is of small extent, is situated on the turnpike road between Watchett and Minehead. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Bath and Wells, value £250. The church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, has a square tower containing four bells. The registers date from 1600. There is a parochial school for both sexes, of recent erection.
