"SWELL, a parish in the hundred of Abdick, county Somerset, 4 miles S.W. of Langport, its post town. The village is near the river Isle. The living is a vicarage* annexed to that of Fivehead, in the diocese of Bath and Wells. The church, dedicated to St. Catherine, is old. The register dates from 1669.
