PYRFORD

"PYRFORD, (or Pirford), a parish in the first division of Godley hundred, county Surrey, 2 miles N.W. of Ripley, its post town, and 3 from the Woking station on the South-Western Railway. The village, which is of small extent, is situated on the Wey navigation, and is wholly agricultural. The line of the London and South-Western Railway passes through the parish.

The living is a vicarage* annexed to the rectory of Wisley, in-the diocese of Winchester. The church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, is an ancient structure, with a wooden spire containing one bell. There is a parochial school. The manor of Pyrford was granted by Queen Elizabeth to the Wolleys, the ruins of whose mansion still exist. The Earl of Onslow is lord of the manor.
