TITSEY

"TITSEY, a parish in the second division of Tandridge hundred, county Surrey, 5½ N.E. of Godstone, its post town, and 7½ S.E. of Stoat's Nest railway station. The village is situated in meadows and hills under Botley Hill, which rises to the height of 880 feet above sea-level. The inhabitants are chiefly engaged in agriculture, and in the quarrying of chalk for the making of lime.

The living is a rectory in the diocese of Winchester, value £180. The church is dedicated to St. James. The old church was taken down and a new edifice erected in 1776, by Sir John Graham, who removed all the old monuments. There is a parochial school entirely supported by Mrs. Gower. G. W. Gower, Esq., is lord of the manor. The principal residence is Titsey Park."
