"COLTON, a parish in the southern division of the hundred of Pirehill, in the county of Stafford, 1 mile N. of Rugeley, its post town, and 2 miles E. of the Colwich station of the Trent Valley line. It is situated on the river Trent and Grand Trunk canal. It contains the hamlet of Lea Lane and the village of Newland.

The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lichfield, value £461, in the patronage of the Rev. C.W. Landor. The church, dedicated to St. Mary, was rebuilt in 1851, with the exception of the tower. It is a stone structure, with beautiful stained-glass windows.

Here are schools for both sexes partly endowed. T. B. Horsfall, Esq., M.P., is lord of the manor, and resides at Bellamour Hall, a fine stone mansion."
