The parish church of St John, designed by Wyatt & Brandon, is a structure of brick, consisting of only a nave, south porch and an embattled western tower of stone, containing one bell.
The original church of St John on this site was the ancient parish church of Tipton, dating from the Saxon period, but in 1797 it was abandoned, having fallen into ruin, and a new parish church, dedicated to St Martin was built at Lower Church Lane. The registers of St John up to this period were transferred to St Martin and are now listed as part of the St Martin's registers.
The church was rebuilt on the old site in 1854 to serve the newly created parish of St John. It was closed between 1913 and 1921 due to damage caused by mining subsidence.
The living is a vicarage, in the gift of the vicar of St James, West Bromwich.
