The book describes the history of each town or village from the time of Domesday recounting who owned the land and property etc. It then gives statistics of each town or village as regards the number of houses and the population in the years preceding 1830: and finally includes a directory of many of the inhabitants together with their occupations and addresses. The vast majority of the names in this index have been transcribed from these directories.
No attempt has been made to eliminate duplicate entries and it is left to the reader to decide whether or not identical, or near identical, entries refer to one and the same person.
Christian names have been largely transcribed as written except that in a few instances of multiple christian names, some abbreviations have had to be made in the interests of space.
Multiple occupations, which were very numerous, have been shortened to one, or occasionally, two as space permits. The word "manufacturer" has been transcribed as "maker" for the same reason.
Entries without dates are from the directories and it can therefore be assumed that these persons were alive in 1830.
No attempt has been made to transcribe the names of medieval persons whose names appear in the historical section as they were almost entirely Lords, Dukes, Earls or Royalty. However some untitled persons have been transcribed from these sections where it is felt that they may be of interest to the reader. In these instances dates (or other information indicating the period in which they lived) are appended to the entry.
Pages 301 to 498 are missing from the book. It would seem that these missing pages would have contained the directory for Birmingham. The reader will observe that there are almost no entries in the transcription for the residents of Birmingham.
Inhabitants of Tamworth feature in the transcription though Tamworth is not now in Warwickshire but in Staffordshire. In the directories, the words 'sen' and 'jun' were used to indicate the 'senior' or junior' - and these has been transcribed as printed in the book.
