"MARDALE, a chapelry partly in the parish of BAMPTON, and partly in that of SHAP, WEST ward, county of WESTMORLAND, 11 miles (W. N. W.) from Orton. The population is returned with the respective parishes. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Carlisle, endowed with £800 royal bounty, and in the patronage of the Vicar of Shap, in which parish the chapel is situated."

Mardale is a parish in the West Ward of the county adjacent to Bampton, Patterdale, Kentmere and Shap.
Until 1748 it was in the parish of Shap.

Returns do not survive for the 'census' of 1787.
Census returns are available from the usual sources for 1841-1911.
Transcript and index for 1851 has been published by the Cumbria Family History Society and also in 'North Westmorland - An Index to the 1851 Census' compiled by David Lowis and Barbara Slack.
Holy Trinity. The church no longer exists, being submerged by the creation of Haweswater reservoir.
