PREFACE. THE Registers of Scorborough date from 1653, on the outside of the first book appears :-

No. 1. The register booke for Scorborough
1653
It is 12 in. by 7 in. in size, and consists of 32 parchment leaves, one or two leaves have been cut out and the lower half of the first page is gone. Outside the parchment pages are four paper sheets scribbled with the names of Richard Stork, John Stork, Robert Stork, and Geo : Wight, 1736. The book is bound in thick limp parchment, and is in fair condition.
On the outside of the second book is :-

Scorbrough Register.
1784.
In size it is 10¾ in. by 6¾ in., and is bound in stiff parchment cover. The first leaf is paper and the remainder of the book consists of 8 parchment pages, four leaves have been removed. This is also in fair condition but shows signs of having at some time experienced damp.

Memorand That John Hewerdine of Scorbrough is by the Parish of Scorbrough chosen to be the Parish Register there and was by me approved and sworne the day and yeare abovesaid. Witnesse my hand
DURANT HOTHAM.
The Christian name in this Signature and in all other places is more like Durand than Durant, but Lord Hotham kindly informs me that the latter is the correct spelling.-Ed.%

Memorand that Isabell Hungate travelling as a vagabond was whipt ye day & year abovsd & sent from hence to ye next constable & so to returne to Hartlepoole in ye County of Durham ye place where she was borne. Jo : Home
February 10th 1786 Paid the Duty Imposed upon Baptisms Marriages & Funerals from the first Day of October 1783 to the present Time To Mr William Porter of Driffield
