"LARTINGTON, in the parish of Romaldkirk. wapentake of Gilling West, and liberty of Richmondshire; 3 miles SSE. of Romaldkirk, 2 miles WNW. of Barnard Castle, a neat rural village, the houses on one side having gardens before them, inclosed by pales, and on the other side a spacious green, shaded by lofty trees. At the foot of the village stands Lartington hall, the seat and residence of Henry Witham, Esq. the proprietor of the village, and the lord of the manor. This is an ancient stone building, in a well wooded and pleasingly diversified park, terminating on the banks of the Tees. The Catholic chapel of the hall is one of the most handsome in the kingdom, and contains one of the best paintings in imitation of sculpture extant; it is a crucifix, executed by Le Brun, in so masterly a manner, as to deceive the most able connoisseurs. Here is a Free School, endowed with £20. a year, by the present lord of the manor. Population, 243.
At Lartington was formerly a chantry of our Lady, probably founded by the Fitzhughs from whom the Maire family can trace their descent, although this manor appears, from Whitaker's Yorkshire, to have come to them by purchase, the chantry was valued (37, Henry VIII.) at 5L. 6s. 8d. per annum."
