In 1868, the parish of Noughaval contained the following places:

"NOUGHAVAL, a parish in the barony of Burren, county Clare, province of Munster, Ireland, 2 miles N.E. of Kilfenora. Ennistimon is its post town. It is 4 miles long by 2 broad. The surface is very rocky, and includes much mountain pasture. The living is a suspended rectory in the diocese of Kilfenora, and in the patronage of the bishop. There is a Roman Catholic chapel, also a hedge-school. Lismoher House and Lodge are the chief residences. In the vicinity are ruins of three castles, likewise of two or three forts."
