The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Island contained the following places:

"ISLAND, (or Inchydony), a parish in the baronies of East Carbery and Barryroe, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 2 miles S. of Clonakilty, its post town. It is 2 miles long by 1 mile broad, and includes the island of Inchydoney, lying in Clonakilty Bay. The surface is for the most part in a high state of cultivation. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ross, value with Kilgariffe, £335, in the patronage of the bishop. This parish belongs partly to the Roman Catholic district of Clonakilty, and partly to that of Rathbarry. The island was granted to the Bishop of Ross by Queen Elizabeth, and is the seat of the Hungerford family. Lead ore exists near Dunmore in a rich vein, yielding a large per-centage of silver.
