The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilcoe contained the following places:

"KILCOE, a parish in the barony of West Carbery, county Cork, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles S.W. of Skibbereen, its post town. It is 3,A miles long by 2½ broad. The surface lies towards the head of Roaringwater Bay. It consists partly of excellent soil, but there is a large proportion of rocky waste. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ross, value with the chapel-of-ease of Clear, £260, in the patronage of the bishop. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Abbeystrowry and Aughadown. The church was built by the late board of First Fruits. There are three day schools. On a tongue of land stretching out into the bay stand the ruins of Kilcoe Castle, built by the MacCartys. Clay slate is the prevailing rock."
