The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Burt contained the following places:

"BURT, (or Bert), a parish in the barony of Innishowen, in the county of Donegal, province of Ulster, Ireland, 7 miles to the S. of Buncrana. The parish, which is extensive, comprising an area of 10,673 acres, lies on the south-eastern shore of Lough Swilly, opposite Inch Island. Burt Hill, in the vicinity, rises to the height of 800 feet, and is the site of an old castle founded by Sir Cahir O'Doherty, of which some ruins remain. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Derry and Raphoe, value £68, in the gift of the Dean of Derry. Burt House is one of the chief residences.
