In 1868, the parish of Kilclief contained the following places:

"KILCLIEF, a parish in the barony of Lecale, county Down, province of Ulster, Ireland. Strangford is its post town. The parish is 2½ miles in length and the same in breadth. The surface consists mostly of good land. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Down, value £180, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is a small modern building near the sea. The parish gives name to a Roman Catholic district, and contains a chapel. There is a parish school. Kilclief Castle, of which some remains exist, was formerly a seat of the bishops of Down. There are ruins of a lepers' hospital. The parish is the reputed site of an abbey presided over by St. Eugene and St. Neill. In the vicinity is Strangford Lough."
