In 1868, the parish of Ballynakill M contained the following places:

"BALLYNAKILL, a parish in the barony of Ballymoe, in the county of Galway, province of Connaught, Ireland, 10 miles to the N.W. of Athleague. It is situated in a mountainous district on the river Suck, and comprises a very large extent of bog and waste land. The living is a vicarage united with that of Dunamon, in the diocese of Kilmore, Ardagh, and Elphin."
