In 1868, the parish of Clontuskert contained the following places:

"CLONTUSKERT, a parish in the baronies of Clonmacnowen and Longford, in the county of Galway, province of Connaught, Ireland, 4 miles to the S.E. of Aughrim. The parish is divided from the county of Roscommon by the river Suck, and is traversed by the road from Ballinasloe to Eyrecourt, the nearest post town. The Grand canal passes by the northern boundary. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Clonfert, value with Clonfert, £91, in the patronage of the crown and bishop alternately. A monastery is alleged to have been founded here in the 9th century by Boaden. The church was built by the late Board of First Fruits in 1818. Here is a Roman Catholic chapel, and a friary at Boula. There are several schools in the parish."
