In 1868, the parish of Inisheer contained the following places:

"INISHEER, an island parish in the barony of Aran, county Galway, province of Connaught, Ireland, 3½ miles from the Clare coast, from which it is separated by South Sound. It is 2 miles long and over 1 mile broad. The living is a vicarage united to the benefice of Ballinakill, in the diocese of Tuam. Here are two churches, but both in ruins."
