In 1868, the parish of Killian contained the following places:

"KILLIAN, a parish in the barony of Killian, county Galway, province of Connaught, Ireland, 5 miles N.E. of Newtown-Bellew. Ballinasloe is its post town. The parish is 5 miles long by 3½ broad. The Shivan stream intersects the parish, which comprises a considerable area of bog. The road from Athlone to Tuam passes through the interior. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Elphin, value with another, £120, in the patronage of the bishop. The police barrack serves as a place of worship. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Killereran. There are likewise a convent chapel and seven day schools. Killian House is the principal residence."

"BALLINAMORE, a village in the parish and barony of Killian, in the county of Galway, province of Connaught, Ireland, 6 miles to the N. of Ahascragh. It is watered by the small river Shiven, a feeder of the Suck. Ballinamore House, the seat of the Hon. M. French, is not far from the village."
