In 1868, the parish of Fenit contained the following places:

"FENIT, a parish and island in the barony of Trughanacmy, county Kerry, province of Munster, Ireland, 6 miles W.N.W. of Tralee. Dingle is its post town. It is situated on the N. side of Tralee Bay, near Samphire Island, with Ballyheigue Bay on the N. A narrow channel separates it from the mainland. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Ardfert, value with Kilmelchedar, £133, in the patronage of the bishop. In the Roman Catholic arrangement the parish is part of the Ardfert union. This island is the property of the Lock family. Here are remains of an old church, and Fenit Castle stands on the N.E. corner of the island.
