The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Fontstown contained the following places:

"FONTSTOWN, a parish and post town in the baronies of North Carragh and West Offaly, county Kildare, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles N.E. of Athy. The surface is boggy. The living is a vicarage and rectory in the diocese of Dublin, value £257. The church was built in 1823, principally by the late Board of First Fruits. It is a neat structure. In the Roman Catholic arrangement the parish forms part of the Narraghmore union. Here is a day school. The civil parish is larger than the ecclesiastical one. Remains of an elk were dug up some years ago, which were preserved at Oak Park, and coins of Ethelred have been found here. Good building stone is quarried.
