The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilrush contained the following places:

"KILRUSH, a parish in the barony of West Offaly, county Kildare, province of Leinster, Ireland, 4 miles S.E. of Kildare. Kilcullen is its post town. It is 3 miles long by 2 broad. The surface comprises some bog, and is intersected by the road from Athy to Kilcullenbridge. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Kildare, value with Ballyshannon, 2347, in the patronage of the crown and bishop alternately. Kilbeggan is the chief seat. Battlemount was the scene of Ormonde's signal victory over the rebels, under Lord Mountgarret, in 1642. An Austin friary was founded here in the 13th century by William de Mareschal."
