In 1868, the parish of Erke contained the following places:

"ERKE, a parish partly in the barony of Galmoy, county Kilkenny, and partly in the baronies of Clandonagh and Clarmallagh, Queen's County, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles S.E. of Johnstown. Maryborough is its post town. The surface is very hilly, the highest ground being 555 feet above sea-level. The living is a rectory and vicarage in the diocese of Ossory, value £550, in the patronage of the crown. The church was built in 1824 by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. There are two Roman Catholic chapels united to that of Fertagh, and several day schools. Here is a police station.
