The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballycahane contained the following places:

"BALLYCAHANE, a parish in the baronies of Pubblebrien and Small County, in the county of Limerick, province of Munster, Ireland, 4 miles to the N.E. of Croom. It lies to the east of the river Maigue. Part of the parish is bog and marshland, and there are large quarries of limestone. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Limerick, Ardfert, and Aghadoe, value £138, in the gift of the bishop. The church is a modern edifice in the early English style. Ballycahane Castle, the ruins of which are near the church, was the seat of the O'Gradys, and was built by them at the close of the 15th century. Here was also a church of the Knights Templars, of which some remains exist."
