The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Knockainy contained the following places:

"KNOCKAINY, (or Aney), a parish in the barony of Small-County, county Limerick, Ireland, 3 miles from Banff. It is situated on the river Commogue, near Lough Gur. It is a large and populous parish. Near the village are remains of two ancient castles, and of an abbey founded in the reign of Henry II., and known as Monster-na-Maig. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Cashel, Emly. Waterford, and Lismore, value with five others, £500. From Knockainy Hill an extensive view is obtained.
