The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Ballysakeery contained the following places:

"BALLYSAKEERY, a parish in the barony of Tirawley, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 4 miles to the N. of Ballina. It lies on the west bank of the river Moy, at its entrance into Killala Bay. There is a considerable extent of bog, and some limestone. Fine salmon abound in the river. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Tuam, Killala, and Achonry, value with the vicarage of Rathreagh, £265, in the gift of the bishop. There are chapels belonging to the Wesleyans, Baptists, and Independents. A Franciscan abbey once existed here, founded by the Joyces, and there are interesting remains of it near the river. The principal seats are Reserk, Broadlands Park, and Netley Park.
