The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Burriscarra contained the following places:

"BURRISCARRA, a parish in the barony of Carra, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 10 miles to the S. of Castlebar. It is situated in a fertile country on the eastern side of Lough Carra, and was the site of a Carmelite monastery, founded at a very early period, and of which some ruins remain. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Tuam, Killala, and Achonry, value with those of Ballyhane and Ballyovey united, £346. The principal seats are Moore Hall, Tower Hill, and Castlecarra. There is a good mineral spring in the vicinity."
