The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Kilcolman contained the following places:

"KILCOLEMAN, a parish in the barony of Clanmorris, county Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, containing its post town, Claremorris. It is 7 miles long and over 6 broad. The surface is much diversified, and includes a large area of bog. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Tuam, value £260, in the patronage of the bishop. The church was erected in 1828 by a gift and loan from the late Board of First Fruits. There are two Roman Catholic chapels and a Wesleyan meeting-house, also several day schools. There are ruins of an old church and a castle."

"CLARE, (or Claremorris), a post and market town in the parish of Kilcolman, in the barony of Clanmorris, in the county of Mayo, province of Connaught, Ireland, 15 miles S.E. of Castlebar, and 135 from Dublin by the Midland, and Great Northern and Western, railways, the latter of which passes through the town, and has a goods terminus for the Ballinrobe and South Mayo traffic. The town is fifth in size and importance in the county, containing about 2,0.00 inhabitants. It has a church, Roman Catholic chapel, sessions-house, police station, union poorhouse, and a dispensary. Quarter and petty sessions are held in the town, which is also the headquarters of the constabulary of the barony of Clanmorris. The property belongs to several proprietors; the principal holder is Alexander C. Lambert, Esq., who resides at Brook Hill, a fine mansion in the immediate vicinity. Castlemaggarrett is the seat of Lord Oranmore, and Claremont of Murray J. Blacker, Esq. The market day is Wednesday. Fairs are held on the 24th May, 22nd June, 17th August, 27th September, and 23rd November.
