The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Girley contained the following places:

"GIRLEY, a parish in the barony of Upper Kells, county Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 3 miles N. of Athboy, its post town. The parochial limits abut on the Westmeath border, and include the villages of Cloncat, Fordstown, and Newtown Girley. The surface consists generally of good land, with some extent of bog. It is drained southward by the river Athboy, and is traversed by the road from Oldcastle to Athboy. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Meath, value £100, in the patronage of the Incumbent of Athboy. The Roman Catholic chapel is a handsome building united to that of Kells. There are some ruins of the old church. Here is a private day school. The principal residences are Drewstown, Johnsbrook, and Friermore."

"CLONCAT, a village in the parish of Girley, in the barony of Upper Kells, in the county of Meath, province of Ulster, Ireland, 3 miles to the N. of Athboy."

"FORDSTOWN, a village in the parish of Girley, barony of Upper Kells, county Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 2 miles N. of Athboy. Here is a police station."
