The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Killegland contained the following places:

"KILLEGLAND, a parish in the barony of Ratoath, county Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 2 miles E. of Ratoath, its post town. It is 1 mile long by half a mile broad, and contains the town of Ashbourne. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Meath, value with Ratoath, £595, in the patronage of the crown and T. L. Norman, Esq. There is a Roman Catholic chapel united to that of Ratoath, also two day schools."

"ASHBOURNE, a village in the parish of Killegland, barony of Ratoath, in the county of Meath, province of Leinster, Ireland, 5 miles to the E. of Dunshanglin, A castle formerly stood here, of which there are some remains. Here is a police station and a racecourse. Fairs are held on the 6th January, the 16th April, the 21st May, the 29th July, and the 31st October. Newbarn is the principal residence."
