The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Borrisnafarney contained the following places:

"BORRISNAFARNEY, a parish in the barony of Clonlisk, King's County, in the province of Leinster, but extending also into the barony of Skerrin, in the county of Tipperary, province of Munster, Ireland, not far from Moneygall. It is situated in a fertile district at the foot of the Devil's Bit mountains, at the head of the small river Allitrim. The living is a rectory united with the vicarage of Bourney, in the diocese of Killaloe, Kilfenora, Clonfert, and Kilmacduagh. There are several seats of the gentry in the parish, among which are Loughton, the residence of Lord Bloomfield; Thorn Vale, Larch Vale, &c. There are vestiges of an ancient castle at Loughton. Trout are found in the Allitrim.
