The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Estersnow contained the following places:

"ESTERSNOW, a parish in the barony of Boyle, county Roscommon, province of Connaught, Ireland, 3 miles S.E. of Boyle, on the road from thence to Tulsk. The soil varies in quality, and there is a large proportion of bog. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Elphin, value with Kilcola, £101, in the patronage of the bishop. The church is a plain old building. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to those of Croghan and Ballinameen. There is a parish school and four other day schools. Croghan House is the principal seat. Cavetown loughs lie to the W. of the church. At Cavetown are seen some curious caves, said to be of considerable extent, and there are some traces of an old castle known as Moylerg. It is said to have once belonged to the MacDermotts. Limestone is quarried here.
