The National Gazetteer of Great Britain and Ireland - 1868

In 1868, the parish of Tumna contained the following places:

"TUMNA, a parish in the barony of Boyle, county Roscommon, province of Connaught, Ireland, 2 miles N. of Carrick-on-Shannon. Leitrim is its post town. The surface consists of a good soil, with some bog. The parish is crossed by the road from Carrick-on-Shannon to Boyle, and is traversed by the rivers Boyle and Shannon. Battlebridge is within its limits. The living is a vic, in the diocese of Elphin, value £115, in the patronage of the bishop. There are a Roman Catholic chapel and a public school. The chief residences are Cootehall, Hughestown, and Woodbrook. The manufacture of woollen and cotton goods is carried on here to some extent, and limestone and building-stone are quarried. There are ruins of a church and of a monastic establishment founded by the O'Connors."
