"MOTHEL, a parish in the barony of Upperthird, county Waterford, province of Munster, Ireland, 3 miles S. of Carrick-on-Suir, its post town. It is 7 miles long, and its extreme breadth is 5 miles. The surface is mountainous, comprising in the S.W. part of the Commeragh range. The river Cladagh passes through the interior, as also does the road front Carrick-on-Suir to Kilthomas. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lismore, value with others, £591. The church was built in 1817 by means of a loan from the late Board of First Fruits. The Roman Catholic chapel is united to that of Rathgormuck. There are three day schools, also remains of an abbey said to have been founded in the 6th century, and dedicated to St. Brogan."

"COUMSHENANE, a lake in the barony of Upperthird, in the county of Waterford, province of Munster, Ireland. It is situated on the southern boundary of the barony. The waters of the lake are uncommonly deep, being partly hemmed in by precipitous rocks, sometimes quite perpendicular. The view from the surrounding heights is very fine. The spot has been neglected by tourists until very recently."
