Welcome to an online gazetteer of Berwickshire. The purpose of these pages is to help you connect a place - whether it be a village, a hamlet, or a small farm - with a parish in the county, in particular to link up with the parish pages among the Berwickshire GENUKI pages. This gazetteer should not be regarded as comprehensive by any means (although the number of references in it will grow over time) or as a definitive guide to the location of a given place name (there could be other instances of the name elsewhere, not listed here yet) but it should give researchers useful clues to follow up.
An entry in the gazetteer indicates that a reference to a place name in a parish has been found in a historical record from the past (the place->parish association may or may not have been accurate, as with any historical record). The same place name may appear under multiple or variant spellings. Parish boundaries sometimes changed, and new parishes were sometimes formed from old ones, so the same name listed under two parishes may occasionally refer to the same place, at different times.
Note also that the contents of these pages should not be reproduced without permission. They are provided here under the firm understanding that they will not be exploited in any way. This growing collection of references is subject to the usual laws and restrictions of copyright.
To use the gazetteer select the starting letter of the place you are looking for. At the moment just under 1900 place names are included, ranging from whole parishes, towns and villages, down to individual streets, farms, hamlets and hills. This number will grow over time as more references are added. Most of the references come from sources from the 19th century and earlier, so spellings can vary. A wide variety of records are being used to compile this resource (county directories, parish histories, maps, sasine records etc.) hopefully combining to give a valuable resource over time.
