LALESTON. DISTRICT NURSING.—On Tuesday evening the annual meeting of the Laleston and District Nursing Association was held at the Laleston National School. At the request of Mrs. Nicholl (Merthyrmawr), the Vicar of Newcastle, the Rev. D. Phillips, presided. The annual report showed that the nurse had made over a thousand visits, and from a financial point of view the Society had held its own. After returning a vote of thanks to the various officers for their services during the past year, the following were re-elected:— President, Mrs. Nicholl, Mertyrmawr; hon. treasurer, Mrs. Knight, Tythegston Court; hon. secretary, Mrs. L. D. Nicholl, Laleston House.

LALESTON. CHRISTMAS GIFTS FOR LALESTON SOLDIERS.—On Friday evening an enjoyable concert was held at the village school, having for its object the purchasing of Christmas gifts for all the men from Laleston who have joined the Colours. The chair was taken by Mr. Rees John, who, in a few well-chosen remarks, explained how the proceeds were to be spent. An excellent programme was gone through, and the loud applause and demands for encores testified to the appreciation of the artistes by the large audience present. C0NSERVATIVE GATHERING AT LALESTON. A very successful smoking concert was held at he Bell Hotel, Laleston, on Wednesday evening. The chair was taken by Mr. R. K. Pritchard, J.P., of Bryntirion, who was supported by Mr. J. Edwards Vaughan and Councillor R. Hughes (Cardiff). Mr. Lloyd Evans, the Conservative agent, was also present. During the evening Councillor Hughes gave an interesting address on "Conservative Principles and Aims." Commencing with the Church, he dwelt on its ancient history and endowments, and showed how it existed ages before the State, and how its history had been interwoven with that of our country. Proceeding, he referred to Conservative legislation in favour of the industrial classes, and sat down amklrt enthusiastic applause.—A cordial vote of themk was accorded Mr. Hughes.

LALESTON. "Youngest Recruit in the Village". A concert was held at the School on Wednesday evening, when Lance-Corpl. Leyshon Owens (Mackworth Arms), the youngest recruit of the village, was presented by Miss Florrie Cross  with a medallion suitably inscribed, and a purse of money handed to him by Mrs. Pittard, in recognition of his military services. LALESTON. The Institute.-We understand that a sub- committee is sitting preparing rules and regulations to govern the new Parish Room which Miss Blandy has very generously handed over to the parishioners. It is hoped to open the building shortly for social and educational purposes. The lower room will, in the evenings, be used as a reading room and for recreation, and the upper room is already being employed for women's and girls' sewing classes.

LALESTON. Sale of Work.—A very successful sale of work was held at Laleston National School last Wednesday in aid of the funds of Laleston Church. A small band of willing workers carried out the project with great credit and success. The Vicar of Newcastle, in asking Mrs. L. D. Nicholl to declare the sale open, explained the object, and was grateful to Mrs. Nicholl for her interest in all matters appertaining to the welfare of the village. LALESTON. Beautiful Gift.—The pretty little church at Laleston has been very fortunate during the present year, and a numberof additions have, been made to beautify it, the latest being an exquisite oak reredos, consisting of side screens panelled in front, with buttresses and pinnacles. The centre has four solid carved symbols, consisting of white vine, passion flower, and the lily, suspended by tracery work, and the Tudor rose. The whole design and the carving have been carried out by Mr. Clark, of Llandaff. The reredos is a gift by Mr. Chas. H. Wilkinson, churchwarden, "In memory of a good mother: Her children shall rise, up and call her blessed."

LALESTON. ODDFELLOWS.—The members of the- Friend-in-Need Lodge, Laleston, were delighted to learn of the well-deserved honour which was paid to their esteemed secretary, Mr. Rees John, on Wednesday, the 9th inst. Mr. John was the recipient of a gold watch, presented by the Bridgend District of Odd- fellows. He has been connected with the district for upwards of 45 years, and during that long period has rendered valuable service to his district. "Tea for The Boys."—On Tuesday last week a tea was provided at Horeb Chapel, Laleston, for all the boys who had served in the war After tea a sacred concert was held, Mr. John Cornelius being the Chairman. Davies read a portion of scripture, after which the Chairman made a few suitable remarks regarding the valuable services rendered by the brave boys of Laleston, all of whom, with the exception of one - Pte.
