The English Baptist cause was established 1858 after differences occurred between some members High Street Baptist Chapel over the appointment of a minister resulting in the formation of Anion (Einon) Chapel which opened in 1860. In 1862 membership grew rapidly, a larger chapel was needed; an exchange of buildings was agreed with Bethel Welsh Baptist Chapel due to their decrease in membership. In 1889 a decrease in Anion's membership and an increase in Bethel's membership meant another arrangement for exchange of buildings was agreed resulting in both chapels reverting to their original cause.Anion was closed for worship in 1968 (Carl Llewellyn Oct 2010)

Built 1807 for the General Baptists, a denomination that became extinct in the town by 1812. The English Baptists purchased the chapel in 1813; by 1826 an extension for seating accommodation was doubled, in 1855 another chapel was erected. In 1840 the English Baptists left Bethel for their newly erected Chapel called High Street Baptist Chapel; the vacant chapel became a branch of Ebenezer Welsh Baptist Chapel. In 1862 membership decreased, with an increase in membership at Anion Chapel an exchange of buildings was agreed. In 1889 an increase in membership at Bethel with a decrease in Anion's membership; meant another arrangement for exchange of buildings was agreed upon resulting in both chapels reverting to their original cause. In 1885 while the Rev T.W George was Minister of High Street Baptist Chapel there was troublesome times there was dissension among some of the members, which resulted in some of the membership leaving the Chapel to form another faction, under the name of Morlais English Baptist, named after the brook that runs along side the Chapel, the construction of the edifice was made with corticated sheeting. The first Minister was the Rev B.D Johns (Periamder), followed by the Rev's J. Morgans; Edward Geo. Thomas; and E Aubrey. After worshiping for some years at Morlais Chapel it was decided to build another Chapel at a different location, services where held in the vestry attached in April 1904 and called Park Hall until the newly erected place of worship was completed. Noddfa Welsh Chapel was originally Twyn Mission Hall built 1896, it was a branch of Elim Chapel Welsh Baptist, Penydarren, it changed its status in 1900 when the Mission Hall became a chapel in it own right, and called Noddfa. Its first Minister was David Glyn Price 1903-1905, his wife Eleanor Jones Price took over the pastroralship in later years. The first Secretary was Mr William Lewis CC, after 26 years being Elim Chapel's secretary. (Carl Llewellyn July 2008)

Ynysgau Cemetery, Merthyr Tydfil (NB - site disappeared in June 2006)- here is (was) a list of names from headstones later moved to other cemeteries.
( The graveyard was attached to Ynysgau Independent Chapel, which was built in 1749 and inaugurated in 1750. The graveyard was one of the oldest in Merthyr with some tombsones/monuments dating back to 1773 and 1776. The Chapel was demolished in March 1967 as part of the Merthyr Town Improvement Plan. The remains of those buried at Ynysgau Chapel were exhumed between 10th - 27th October 1969, and re-interred at the Ffrwyd section of the Cefn Cemetery. Many of the old tombstones were indecipherable with age and only some 49 names were legible. Unfortunately, the chapel registers have not survived, it appears that they were lost when the chapel was flooded (the chapel was adjacent to the River Taff). Further unidentified human remains were found at the site during excavation for a new road and were re-interred at Cefn Cemetery on 6 March 1998.

Comment by Merthyr Library; " Regarding St. Detutus' Chapel, built in Dowlais in 1844 you are quite correct in thinking that this is in fact is a mis-transcription of St. Illtyd or a Latinized version of the name. The records date back to 1836 but the present church was built in 1844 and the term St. Detutus is only used on the 1851 Religious Census; therefore the name is not commonly known. .............. "
