KNIGHTON. SEPTEMBER FAIR.— This old-established fair was held on Monday, and largely attended by buyers from all parts. There was an immense number of sheep offered, and the prices were good. Radnor ewes fetched 36s to 44s, and wethers 30s to 48s. Shropshire ewes, 36s to 46s, and wethers, 30s to 55s.

KNIGHTON. TEMPERANCE LECTURE.—An interesting temperance lecture was given in the Baptist Chapel, on Tuesday evening, by Mr G. D. Allott, of Bradford. A number of persons donned the blue ribbon. The Rev. W. Williams, Baptist minister, presided.

VOLUNTEER CORPS.—Some time back an effort was made to institute a corps of volunteers in this town, but without success. The matter has again been taken in hand, and a meeting was held at the Norton Arms Hotel on Tuesday night, with Mr C. A. Otway, captain commanding the 9th Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers, in the chair. A number of gentlemen were present, and it was decided to form a corps in conjunction with the 9th Herefordshire Rifle Volunteers. About two dozen of those present gave in their names as willing to join, and were sworn in accordingly.

KNIGHTON. CRICKET CLUB.—A concert in aid of the funds of this club WM held on Monday at the Assembly- rooms. There was a good audience. KNIGHTON. Last Saturday, the funeral of a child, seven months old, belonging to one of the members of the Baptist Church in the town, took place. The Rev M.H.Ricketts, vicar, refused to bury it because it had not been sprinkled, consequently a short service was conducted on the road outside the churchyard by the Rev J. Lambert (Primitive Methodist) and W. Williams (Baptist Minister), and then the body was conducted to the church- yard and buried in silence.

KNIGHTON. COURSING.—By the kindness of Mr C. C. Rogers, of Stanage Park, a friendly coursing meeting was held on his estate on Monday last. The weather was bad, and the sport was very poor, only one hare being killed. The company afterwards sat down to an excellent dinner at the Norton Arms Hotel.

KNIGHTON. FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT. — Mr H. T. Weyman, coroner for South Shropshire, held an inquest at Knighton, on Saturday evening, as to the death of Mr John Ruell, farmer and cattle dealer, whose body was found beside the line near his house at Panpanton, on Thursday afternoon. Deceased, who was about 76 years of age, seemed to have been struck by the up express from Swansea. He was in the habit of walking with his head down, and was slightly deaf. The driver and fireman of the train stated that they did not see the deceased, and knew nothing of the accident. The jury, without retiring, found that deceased was accidentally knocked down and killed by a passing train while crossing the line on his way home.

KNIGHTON. TEA AND SPORTS.—A tea-drinking and sports for the benefit of the "Brown Club" was held on "Brinycastle" on Saturday last. All the trades- people closed their shops at four o'clock, and this, together with a very fine day, caused the attendance to be a good one. KNIGHTON. THE SHROPSHIRE AND WEST MIDLAND SHOW. — Extensive preparations are being made for this event, which takes place on July 23rd and following days. The railway company have made a new bridge over the river to the show ground, and built a dock for the transfer of machinery and animals. The society's contractor, Mr Smith, of Oswestry, has erected nearly two miles of shedding. The entries are large and everything promises a success

KNIGHTON. THE NATIONAL SCHOOL.-On Friday, the 4th inst., this school was visited by Her Majesty's Inspector, the Rev. B. J. Binns. The scholars, under the able tuition of the schoolmaster, Mr. Hudson, have made excellent progress during the past twelve months, as was evidenced by the ready manner in which they answered all the questions put to them at the examination.

KNIGHTON. ARRIVAL OF CONVALESCENT SOLDIERS.—22 convalescent soldiers arrived here on Tuesday evening, and were met by the members of the Red Cross Society (commandant, Mrs C. C. Rogers)- There are at present 31 soldiers being cared for by the society, 17 being accommodated at The Cottage and 14 at Offa's Lodge.

KNIGHTON. Mr J. L. Allcock received news from the War Office, on Saturday morning, to the effect that his younger son, Capt. W. T. A. L. Allcock. R.F.C., who had been reported missing on June 5th. was killed in action on that date. It will be remembered that, when Mr Allcock was last seen by his comrades, he was surrounded by hostile machines. Much sympathy is felt by a large circle of friends in this neighbourhood for Mr and Mrs Allcock and the other relatives.
