The West of England played an important part in the Civil War. This paper, delivered at the Association's 1889 Tavistock meeting focuses on newspaper reports of the period. These are generally highly coloured and devised to support the cause espoused by their author's. They are generally comprised of a mixture of "virulent abuse and unworthy accusation". A majority focus on the progress made by both sides in Devon and Cornwall, particularly with the defence of Plymouth. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
