John Hawkins (1532 - 12 November 1595), was born in Plymouth. William, his father was a confidant of Henry VIII and one of England's principal sea captains, having sailed to the New World ca. 1527. Sir Francis Drake, his second cousin, aided him in his second voyage. He was a shipbuilder, naval administrator and commander, merchant, navigator, pirate and slave trader. As treasurer (1577) and controller (1589) of the Royal Navy, he rebuilt older ships and helped design the ships that withstood the Spanish Armada in 1588. Hawkins served as a vice admiral and was knighted for gallantry. Google with the Archive Organization has sponsored the digitisation of books from several libraries. The Internet Archive makes available, in its Community Texts Collection (originally known as Open Source Books), books that have been digitised by Google from a number of libraries. These are books on which copyright has expired, and are available free for educational and research use. This rare book was produced from a copy held by the Princeton University Library, and is available from the Internet Archive.
