William Strode (c.1602-1645) was a poet, Doctor of Divinity and Public Orator of Oxford University, one of the Worthies of Devon of John Prince (d.1723). He was born in Devon and baptised on 11 January 1602/3 (probably at the age of one) at Shaugh Prior, about 4 miles north of Newnham, the ancient seat of the Strode family. He was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. In August 1636, Charles I, with his queen, nephews and court visited the University for three days. Strode gave the speech of welcome when the King arrived, and The Floating Island was one of three plays provided for entertainment. The play was apparently not well received. The author of this publication submitted it as a PhD thesis to the faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1908.
