"CHADWELL HEATH, a straggling hamlet in a remote part of the parish of Dagenham, Beacontree Hundred, Dagenham Union, and verging on Hainault Forest, situate for the most part on the turnpike road leading from Great Ilford to Romford, and midway between each place, 2½ miles from the railway station at either town. Here is a chapel for the Baptists, also a large Infant school, and a station for the metropolitan police force. [From the Post Office Directory of Essex, Herts, Kent ... , 1855]
