Kelly's Directory (1886) - Yaverland

Yaverland is a parish in the East Medina liberty, rural deanery and archdeaconry of the Isle of Wight and diocese of Winchester, situated about 8 miles east-south-east from Newport, 5 south from Ryde, and a mile south from Brading, overlooking Sandown bay. The church (not dedicated) is a small ancient Norman edifice of stone brought from Brittany, with chancel, nave, and a small bell turret: it is situated on the side of a hill, half a mile from the coast, shaded by a grove of elms, and is an object of great interest, having been built in the fifteenth century: the nave is separated from the chancel by a noble Norman arch, in excellent preservation. The entrance is through an arch orginally portion of a cell dedicated to St. Urian, dating from the fourteenth century. The register dated from the year 1633. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, with residence, in the gift of Sir G. E. W. Graeme Hamond-Graeme bart of Norton Lodge, Yarmouth, and held since 1869 by the Rev. William Molland Lee M.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, who is surrogate. Sir Graham Eden William Graeme Hamond-Graeme bart. is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loam; subsoil, clay, chalk and sandstone. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 817 acres of land and 79 of water and foreshore; rateable value £1,237; the population in 1881 was 153, including 84 in the forts and battery.
