"ACRISE, a parish in the hundreds of Loningborough and Folkestone, in the lathe of Shepway in the county of Kent, 5 miles N.E. of Hythe, and 10 from Dover, being about 4½ N. of Folkstone railway station. It is mentioned in Domesday Survey as Acres, and is situated in a wild, dreary country. There is no village, the houses being scattered; but an annual fair is held on the first Tuesday after the 10th October. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Canterbury, value £171, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. Acrise Place is the residence of T. Papillon, Esq, who is lord of the manor. This parish is a meet for the East Kent hounds."
