NEWICK is a parish and pretty village 4½
miles west from Uckfield railway station, 8 south-east from Hayward's Heath, 44 from London, 9 from Cuckfield, in the Eastern division of the county, Chailey union, Barcombe hundred, Lewes rape, county court district and archdeaconry, and diocese of Chichester. The church of St. Mary is an old stone building in the Early English style: it has nave, north aisle with a chancel of Decorated work, and low square embattled tower with 3 bells. The living is a rectory, annual value £387, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. Thomas, Baden Powell, M.A., of Oriel College, Oxford; the Rev. William Powell, M.A., of Exeter College, Oxford, is curate. Newick Place, or Park, is the seat of James Henry Sclater, Esq., J.P. Beechland is a handsome building, the residence of W. H. Blaauw, Esq., J.P. There is a National school and a Charity school for girls, founded and endowed by Lady Vernon, in 1771, for twelve poor girls of the parish. The school is supported by a rent charge of £50 a year upon the Park estate. The Baptists have a chapel here. The soil is strong clay. Here is a small brewery.
